“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”

1 Timothy 5:8

Geoffrey Owens is best known for his role as Alvin Thibodeaux on the hit sitcom The Cosby Show. However, for the last 15 months, he has worked as a team member for the popular grocery chain Trader Joe’s. “He looked bloated and fat and unhappy”, said Karma Lawrence, the 50-year-old medical secretary who took his picture and sent it to the Daily Mail (presumably for a small fee).

When the Cosby Show ended in 1992, jobs became far and few in between. “I got to the point that I needed to take a job to pay my bills, to support my family, it was basically that,” Owens said. “I wanted a job that had some flexibility, so that if I did stay in the entertainment industry if I could continue to audition and do jobs if I could, and Trader Joe’s provided that.”

“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”

2 Thessalonians 3:10

I shop at Trader Joe’s and it has always been one of the most relaxing places to shop. The employees seem to really enjoy working there and have always made it a point to remember my family and me.

At the time the story broke, I wondered what troubled people the most. That he is no longer entertaining us (Psalm 137:3) or that he is working at Trader Joe’s. Either way, it takes a lot of humility to go from being a star of one of the most popular shows in television history to working at a grocery store.

It can be very difficult to go to work every day knowing that your worth is not reflected in your pay and that each day, week, and month is only giving you just enough. However, the scriptures say that when we are keeping God’s laws that he will provide for us what we need (Psalm 37:25). I pray that we all keep moving forward for our families and our nation and that we continue to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

“Marvel not at the works of sinners; but trust in the Lord, and abide in thy labour: for it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord on the sudden to make a poor man rich.”

Ecclesiasticus 11:21
